Sunday Adult Opportunities ~ Part of our
Exploration Hour! Offerings Meet at 10:15 am in Westminster Hall
and Room 10 Offerings in April 2024
April 28 ~ Storm Bucket Packing ~ led by the Social Justice and Mission Team ~ Social Hall and Westminster Hall
In honor of Earth Week and to engage in Earth and Climate service, the Social Justice and Mission Team will host a “storm bucket packing” event to care for those impacted by increasingly-prolific flood and fire events. Storm buckets contain supplies like trash bags, gloves, bleach and other items that help people weather and clean up after a disaster. Participants of all ages will join a “Connecting Conversations” activity at coffee hour in the Social Hall. Then, small groups will be invited to take part in specific steps of bucket packing in Westminster Hall and return to coffee hour for more conversation and snacks. April 7, 14, & 21 ~ “Connect” ~ led by Zack Maser, Jamie Bauman, and Laura Millard ~ Room 10 Connect is an invitation to deepen your relationship with others and with God by contemplating scripture, lyrics, writing, poetry, and other topics of interest through small group discussions. This is meant to be a time to sit with questions without needing the answers, speak from the heart, pray, meditate, reflect, and be changed by the stories and sharing of others. Anyone with a desire to Connect more deeply, whether you are a believer or unsure what you believe, is invited to join us. Come as you are to listen, share, grow, and be! Offerings in May 2024
May 5 ~ "Who Are We Supposed To Be?", led by Paul Mortimore ~ Westminster Hall
Join Paul Mortimore for an overview of the New Testament teaching on Christlikeness. What does it mean to be like Jesus? Is it an issue of 'being' or one of 'becoming?' Can we actually ever get there? And, if so, how? And can we fit this into one Sunday school hour? May 12 ~ "My Mother’s Favorite Hymn", led by Heike Burghart Rice ~ Sanctuary Some hymns carry special meaning for us throughout our lives. In honor of Mother’s Day, we will take some time to remember and sing our mother’s favorite hymns. Come with your selections and a few words to share about what the hymn meant for you and your family. We will meet by the piano in the sanctuary. May 19 ~ "Imagery and Narratives", led by Heather Bruhn, Westminster Hall Heather Bruhn, our resident expert of Art History, will share artwork by Indigenous Americans, Aboriginal Australians, and African Americans, and discuss how these groups are taking artistic control of their own imagery and narratives. May 5, 12, & 19 ~ “Connect”, led by Zack Maser, Jamie Bauman, and Laura Millard ~ Room 10 Connect is an invitation to deepen your relationship with others and with God by contemplating scripture, lyrics, writing, poetry, and other topics of interest through small group discussions. This is meant to be a time to sit with questions without needing the answers, speak from the heart, pray, meditate, reflect, and be changed by the stories and sharing of others. Adult Education Resources
October 2023
The Jana Marie Foundation and the PA Prison Society both gave terrific presentations to Adult Ed during October. There are 4,100 inmates in Centre County, and we learned a lot about food and medical access, jobs on the inside, and a bit about some of the challenges faced by the families of our incarcerated neighbors. The Centre County Chapter of the PA Prison Society slides and handouts are all available to us, and are worth viewing, even without the accompanying presentation. The Jana Marie Foundation presentation to Adult Ed and Oasis focused on suicide prevention. They are able to share two slides full of local and national resources, as well as this link to upcoming QPR trainings (QPR is research based suicide prevention training. The QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer). The dates of the trainings appear in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the form.
December 2023
Nearly all of us will need support navigating difficult health issues ourselves, or want to support someone else who is doing so. On Sunday, December 10, Adult Ed hosted Dr. Chris Calkins, who shared three handouts — his recent Centre Daily Times article, a page of questions to ask before surgery, and a double-sided page of ways to support loved ones who are navigating major health challenges (and the health care system). Chris has kindly given us permission to share with the congregation. You can find and download all three PDFs here.
