Dean began his tenure as Sr. Pastor at State College Presbyterian Church in mid-September, 2013. He previously served churches in Chicago, IL suburb, Clarendon Hills, Salem, VA, Houston, TX, and Monroe, LA. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Vanderbilt University in 1982, a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University in 1986, and his doctorate from Columbia Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 2010.
Dean and his wife, Peggy, also an ordained minister and serving as Hospital Chaplain at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, have three grown children, Caroline, an attorney in Chicago, David, currently in NJ, and Julia, in a graduate program at Michigan.

Mike began his work with us at SCPC on October 1, 2015. His position has a specific emphasis on work with youth and mission. He received his B.A. in Sociology from Eastern University in 2010, his M. Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2014, and his M.S.W. from Rutgers University in October 2015. He has a varied background with both youth and mission initiatives.
Mike, originally from Southern CA, his wife, Brianna Hall,and their 2 children Elle, and Emmie, live in Park Forest.
Deannine Shipman, Director of Education and Program

Deannine spent her childhood years in North Carolina, California, and Virginia, while her family moved around the country. She graduated from Presbyterian College in 1982 and received her MA from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1984. She worked in churches in South Carolina, Georgia, and Birmingham, AL before coming to SCPC in November 1997.
Her responsibilities include guidance and oversight of the education programs such as Sunday School, LOGOS, Childcare, Confirmation, and Adult Education. Deannine works closely with our Stay and Play Director, Childcare Coordinator, and Kitchen Coordinators (for youth programs) on a weekly basis. Deannine participates in leading worship and especially enjoys doing the Children’s Messages on Sunday mornings. She has three children, Abby, a Penn State graduate, Joshua, a student at Penn State, and Brittany, a freshman at Lesley University.
Ned Wetherald, Director of Music Ministry

Ned has served SCPC since 1994 after nine years of service at The Hagerstown, Maryland Presbyterian Church. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Church Music and Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. Ned is our organist, he directs or supervises all choirs and the handbell choir, works with the pastors in planning worship, and edits the PresbyPost — our monthly newsletter.
Ned and his wife, Karen, a musician and retired teacher, live in Bellefonte with their cats.
Diana Malcom, Associate in Ministry for

Diana has been on staff since 1999. Originally from DuBois, she came to SCPC after serving in ministry as Camp Director of Geneva Hills in the Scioto Valley Presbytery and Calvin Center in the Greater Atlanta Presbytery. She has degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary, Penn State, and Lock Haven University.
Diana enjoys her varied ministry responsibilities at SCPC, including working with middle school youth, college-age, and mission ministries. She also is staff resource to the Spiritual Formation Ministry Unit. She and her husband Blair have two children, Wilson and Lydia.
Martha Trout, Membership and Program Associate

Martha is a lifelong resident of State College and member of SCPC. She received a BS in Individual and Family Studies in the College of Human Development at Penn State. After operating an Administrative Consulting business and managing a local independent psychologist’s private practice for several years, she joined the SCPC staff in this position that was formed in 2003.
As Program Associate, Martha manages the church database, the church website and the church’s communication efforts. She resources church programs with the development and publication of informational materials, and compiles the Annual Report of the Congregation. She is a staff resource to the Membership Ministry Unit, coordinates the membership opportunities, and works closely with the Session, the Education Ministries, FISH and LOGOS.
She is an ordained Elder and has volunteered with LOGOS and FISH. Martha and husband Kerry live in State College and have a daughter, Kristi, who is a third generation Penn State graduate.
Janet Heasley, Church Secretary

Janet grew up in Elmira, New York. She graduated from Ohio Northern University with a BS/BA and moved to State College in 1983. She joined the membership of SCPC in 1988 and joined the staff in 2000.
Janet has served as a Deacon and volunteered with Stay and Play, LOGOS, and FISH programs of which her two children, Brad and Kelsey, have also participated in. She is married to Paul who is the Agricultural Sciences teacher at State College Area High School.

Laura joined the SCPC staff on June 1, 2008. A native of Dubois, PA, she is a graduate of Muskingum College (a small Presbyterian College) in New Concord, OH. She then moved to State College where she volunteered at SCPC as a FISH leader. While she was working at The Meadows Psychiatric Center in the Children’s Unit, she met her husband Bernie. They moved to Harrisburg, PA where she served on the Session of Faith Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Education Committee for Presbytery, a Sr. High Youth Leader, a Sunday School teacher, Nursery Attendant and a Stephen Minister. While living in Harrisburg Laura also worked with the Learning and Sharing Center as a toddler room teacher and with Keystone Residence as the Behavior Specialist — working with people who have developmental disabilities living in residential community homes. They returned to State College in 2004 and Laura has spent many hours volunteering with LOGOS, Sunday School and Summer Sunday School.
Laura came to our church through a family connection — her father is Al Wilson and her sister is SCPC Associate in Ministry, Diana Malcom. Bernie and Laura live in Port Matilda. Their son, Ethan, is a PSU student.
Michelle Fortin, Financial Administrator

Michelle was born and raised in Maine and went to college and graduate school in Maine. She and her family came to State College a few years ago for her husband’s job at GE’s Lewistown plant. About a year and a half ago he took a job at PSU. They have two daughters – Abby is a freshman at Penn State this fall and Libby is a State High sophomore, plays field hockey and runs track. They live in State College with their 2 cats and a dog. Her normal office hours are 8:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday thru Friday.
Anne Thomas, Assistant Financial Administrator
Anne grew up in Princeton, NJ. She graduated from the University of Michigan with both a Bachelor’s degree in Voice Performance and an MBA. Because she was a Navy wife, she has lived extensively overseas as well as in various locations on the Eastern Seaboard. She has two children, Hunter and Alexandra.
Anne’s responsibilities include deposits, quarterly financial statements and managing the database for Safeguarding our Children and Youth at SCPC.

Emma grew up in this church, and now continues as not only a volunteer with LOGOS, but now our Childcare Coordinator. Emma attends the Pennsylvania College of Technology and will graduate in May with a Bachelors of Science in Applied Health Studies, Occupational Therapy Assistant Concentration. She is currently a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. Emma works as a nanny in her spare time, and brings a wealth of energy, knowledge, and expertise in the area of childcare.
Childcare in our building can be offered for most programs, except for committee meetings. Our childcare workers and volunteers all have clearances, and work closely with Emma. Anyone wanting to offer childcare for an event should contact Emma two weeks in advance.
Amy and Mike Gordon, Kitchen Coordinators for LOGOS and FISH
Amy and Mike serve as the Kitchen Coordinators for LOGOS and FISH. They organize menus and coordinate cooking crews, shop for food and help prepare meals. If your youth has special dietary needs, you can contact them directly. Amy and Mike have lots of energy and knowledge and we are lucky to have them in this position!
Greg Salokangas, Building Manager/Head Custodian

We welcomed Greg Salokangas to our staff in October, 2016. Greg and his wife, Pam, moved to the State College from Cape Cod, MA. He has extensive background in service-sector jobs and training in both plumbing and carpentry. He describes himself as “an expert handyman”. Greg works primarily weekdays, mornings through mid-afternoon.
Bob grew up in Boalsburg, here in Happy Valley, after moving to the area as a child. He spent the past 23 years working for the Centre County Solid Waste Authority, and joined the SCPC staff in April 2013. Bob works the evening shift; 3:00 – 11:00 pm.
Bob has 3 grown children, the youngest is currently in college, a granddaughter and a step-granddaughter. His oldest son is a barber and his daughter is a respiratory therapist at Mt. Nittany Medical Center. A sports fan, Bob is a family man and is happiest working around people. He and his partner, Patricia Dorman currently live in Zion.
Paul Sheets returns as our Sunday Custodian. His hours during the program year are 7:30 am-3:30 pm. During the summer months, his hours are 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.
